Matthews was a farming community in the 1800s, originally named Stumptown after residents cleared out all the trees in the area leaving only stumps. In 1879 the town was incorporated as Matthews in honor of Edward Watson Matthews, a director of the railroad that brought the first train through the area in 1874. Like Waxhaw and some other historic towns in the area, there are some neat old historic buildings positioned around the railroad tracks, now renovated to house unique shops and restaurants. A new town hall has been constructed downtown Matthews, along with office and retail development surrounded by parks and old neighborhoods.
