Indian Trail, incorporated in 1907, is located in Union County, 15 miles southeast of Charlotte. The town limits encompass approximately 20 square miles with an additional 15 square miles of planning area. Early settlement can be traced to the 1750s and a path the Waxhaw Indians used, hence the name “Indian Trail”. The economy evolved from a trading community and gold mining to agriculture and transportation in the 1870s with the presence of the railroad. Since the 1950s and 1960s, however, a national suburban trend emerged – one that continues today and has a tremendous impact on Indian Trail.
Indian Trail’s close proximity to a metropolitan area has accelerated its growth as many of our residents work in Charlotte. The town has also benefitted from a number of distributors located here as well as several new commercial developments.
Since 1990, the town has experienced a tremendous amount of growth. The town has seen its residential population go from 1,942 in 1990 to 11,905 in 2000 to 27,161 in 2005. In early 2009, Indian Trail was recognized as one of the Top Ten Family-Friendly Towns in the nation by Family Circle magazine. With its proximity to Charlotte, rural setting, and a host of Town festivals and activities, it is no wonder why Indian Trail has become a popular place to live.
As a result of all this growth, the town has concentrated planning efforts to keep pace. The town adopted a long range land use plan, a new ordinance, and a pedestrian plan in recent years, with focus also on parks and recreation to accomodate the new neighborhoods in the area. Indian Trail, North Carolina intends to continue to grow wisely into the future.
