Fort Mill, South Carolina
Fort Mill is a small town located along the I-77 corridor in the northernmost part of South Carolina. It is one of the fastest growing communities in this area, boasting excellent schools and a strong sense of community. The Fort Mill area is home to a number of thriving businesses and corporate offices. Its close proximity to the Charlotte metropolitan area provides numerous educational, recreational and employment opportunities.
The town of Fort Mill was established in 1873, and it grew rapidly in the late 19th century as textile mills were established. After many textile mill shut-downs the town continued to grow rapidly due to its proximity to the city of Charlotte. Today it is considered a suburb of Charlotte, positioned along the I77 between Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC but closer to Charlotte.
Fort Mill maintains several recreational parks and historic points of interest, due to its natural landscape and the wealth of local textile industry families. Sidewalks and walking paths in this area also connect a popular Lake Wylie community, Tega Cay, to downtown Fort Mill. The Anne Springs Close Greenway, parks and peach farms provide lots of open space around the historic village. A portion of Carowinds amusement park and the Knights stadium are also located in Fort Mill. The historic downtown has a well kept inventory of turn-of-the-century buildings nestled on a main street by the railroad tracks and surrounded by by a mixture of modest bungalows and fancy victorian historic homes. The planned development Baxter Village is located several miles outside of the historic marketplace, along the I-77 corridor. More retail and many new housing options are located in and around the Baxter Village development.>
